Accutane Lawsuit 2010 Information
People suffering from inflammatory bowel disease continue to file Accutane lawsuit 2010 claims based on their serious and permanent injuries. If you have taken Accutane for the treatment of cystic acne, you may be familiar with the devastating side effects this drug can cause. This drug was originally created for use with chemotherapy, some 27 years ago. It evolved, however, into a very effective acne treatment. It also goes by the name Isotretinoin, and is also marketed under other names. It was developed by a company called Hoffman La-Roche Pharmaceuticals. This company is owned by an international conglomerate called “The La Roche Group,” and is said to be the 7th largest pharmaceutical company in the world. Accutane was a big seller for the company; it is estimated that they had annual sales of over $1.2 billion dollars.
The drug itself is a derivative of vitamin A, and works by decreasing the size of the acne suffer’s oils glands. 90% of the users of this drug reported significant improvement in their skin. Unfortunately, this drug comes with serious side effect, some that arise years later after its use.
Accutane side effects have been reported by users that include inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. These diseases all affect the bowel, and cause significant inflammation of the intestinal tract. Symptoms range from severe cramping and diarrhea, to bloody stools and weight loss. While these symptoms can be treated with medications, there is no known cure for these disorders. Other side effects have also been documented including suicides and birth defects.
Because of reports of these side effects, La Roche eventually put a black box warning on the Accutane label. Unfortunately for many, it was too late. People that have become ill prior to the publication of the warning have been particularly successful in terms of lawsuits against the manufacturer. The argument being of course, that the company failed to notify Accutane users of the devastating side effects of the drug. In addition, suits have been brought against the company and health care professionals for prescribing the drug unnecessarily, failing to adequately warn of the side effects, and not monitoring the patient adequately during treatment.
To date, more than 1,000 Accutane lawsuit claims have been filed against La-Roche, and many have been extremely successful in state and federal court. La-Roche lost its first 6 lawsuits brought against them, with verdicts that have totaled an upwards of $56 million dollars.
