Accutane Recall

In June 2009 the manufacturer of Accutane, Hoffman LaRoche, pulled their acne drug from the marketplace which was essentially an Accutane recall 2009 withdrawal. This followed the company losing a product liability lawsuit where the jury awarded more than $33 million in compensation to the injured plaintiff. There currently is no national Accutane class action lawsuit and claims continue to be filed individually on behalf of consumers who developed serious injuries including Accutane inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Prior to the Accutane recall, the medication had been on the market since 1982 under the Accutane brand along with generic versions.

Accutane Inflammatory Bowel Disease

It is estimated that around one million people in the United States have inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Diagnosis of IBD is based on a combination of exams including endoscopic, x-rays, and blood and tissue tests. Two-thirds to three-quarters of patients with Crohn’s disease will require surgery at some point during their lives. Surgical treatment becomes necessary when medications are no longer able to control the symptoms. Surgery may also become necessary if there is an intestinal obstruction or other complications such as an intestinal abscess. In such cases, the diseased bowel segment is removed in a procedure called a resection.
