Lawsuit Against Accutane 2010
Patients suffering from serious inflammatory bowel problems have continued to look into a lawsuit against Accutane. If you or a loved on has used in the drug Accutane (also known as isotrentinoin), in the recent past, you may unfortunately be aware of some of the serious side effects it can cause. Inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, birth defects and psychiatric complications are just a few of the side effects of this drug that people are experiencing. This drug was released by the Hoffman-La Roche Pharmaceutical Company has been used for severe nodular acne, and interestingly had its beginnings as a drug used in chemotherapy. As such, this drug is extremely potent, and at times has caused debilitating side effects.
This drug comes in pill form, and is a derivative of vitamin A. While it has proven to be extremely effective in the treatment of severe acne by reducing the size of the skin’s oil glands up to over 55%, it comes with severe side effects. Because of a lengthy list of these effects associated with this drug, Hoffman La-Roche stopped production of Accutane in June of 2009. However, it continues to be manufactured by other pharmaceutical companies under other names. Health care providers continue to prescribe these drugs despite the known health implications.
Because of the more serious Accutane side effects that these this and similar drugs produce, many lawsuits have been filed against not only La-Roche, but the health care providers prescribing them. The manufacturer did produce a black box warning on the drug, which satisfied the guidelines of the FDA. People that used the drug prior to this warning being posted have been more successful in terms of lawsuits against the manufacturer.
People have experienced side effects that range from mild to moderate, and even severe in some cases. More than 1,000 class action type lawsuits have been brought against La Roche to date in state and federal court. In most all of the instances, the crux of the lawsuit was that La Roche failed to adequately notify its customers of the potential side effects. The company lost legal actions in the first six suits, with verdicts totaling a massive $56 million dollars.
